A domestic worker was left with a broken ankle after she was knocked down by a motor vehicle on Monday morning while she was on her way to work in Centurion.
According to her employer, Johan Albertyn, he received a call around 06:00 from one of the women who was walking with the victim, informing him about the accident.
The accident took place at the corner of Ruimte and Piet Hugo streets. Albertyn said he was astonished that the driver of the white Corsa Lite bakkie did not stop to help the injured woman, but instead sped off.
“When I got to the scene, she could not move and we are not sure if she had internal injuries or not. The ambulance took a long time to come but we managed to take her to Kalafong Hospital,” said Albertyn. To add insult to injury, when the police were contacted for a statement to be taken , Albertyn said they had to pull a few strings in order for the case to be opened. “I had to use the social media to get help and someone whose husband is a policeman, took our statement. We don’t know how the accident happened, all we know is that it was a late model white Corsa vehicle with white colour coded side mirrors and I have handed the broken mirror over to the police for investigations.”
An eye witness, Esther Skhosana, who traveled with the victim, told Rekord that when the accident happened, the victim was standing on a white line when the white bakkie hit her. She said everyone who saw the accident was surprised that the driver sped off as if nothing happened.
Rekord attempted to get a comment from the police about why they refused to take a statement but received no answer.
