Over two hundred arrested

Over two hundred people were arrested over the weekend after a crime prevention operation in the Mamelodi cluster, police said.

Over two hundred people were arrested this weekend during crime operations in the Mamelodi cluster, police spokesperson, Constable Sam Shibambo said.

“The operations focused on road blocks, stop-and-search, tracing of wanted suspects and general crime prevention duties. The operation started on Friday morning and lasted till Sunday morning,” said Shibambo.

On Friday, a 26-year-old Eersterust man was arrested for possession of CAT drugs to the value of half a million rand. The drugs were found hidden in a cooler box that the suspect was carrying at the time.

“The majority of the suspects were arrested for crimes such as house robberies, possession of firearms, illegal gambling, road traffic violations as well as the contravention of  the liquor act,” Shibambo said.

Most of the alleged criminals will appear at either the Pretoria Magistrate Court or the Mamelodi Magistrates Court on Monday.
