Mob justice after robbery
A robbery led to mob justice in Mamelodi on Saturday. Police warns not to take the law in own hands.
The community should not take the law into their hands and should report any crime to the police.
This call by police comes after residents of Mamelodi West, Section B3 beat up a man in his early 20’s who tried to rob a woman on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Captain Johannes Maheso said the suspect and his accomplice ran away after hitting a woman with a brick on the head and tried to take her bag.
“The woman cried out for help and the community gave chase, grabbed the suspect and gave him the beating of his life,” Maheso said.
The residents who wish stay anonymous said calling the police is just a waste of time: “The police would come and arrest the suspect and tomorrow the suspect will be walking free in our streets. We are not taking the law into our own hands, we are actually fighting crime in our community.”
Captain Maheso said: “The community should stop taking the law into their hands. They are not above the law. They should have called the police after apprehending the suspect and the police and court will deal with the suspect.”
No case was opened against the suspect.
