Man dumps dead girlfriend and toddler in long-drops

A 32-year-old man is facing murder charges after he allegedly killed his girlfriend and her son before dumping them in different long-drop toilets.

A 32-year-old man is facing two murder charges after his girlfriend and a toddler were found dead in a long-drop toilet in Hamanskraal, north of Pretoria, police said.

Police said the girlfriend, Mercia Mavhungu (24), and her two-year-old son went to visit the accused boyfriend in Moeka near Temba, Hamanskraal.

“The woman, from Cullinan, received a call from her boyfriend on the 7th of August to meet him at Deneboom. He wanted them to visit his home in Hammanskraal and to buy them clothes. This man, however, is not the biological father of the child,” said police spokesperson Sergeant Thembi Nowathe.

Nowathe said Mavhungu and her son stayed over at the accused home, but disappeared the following day.

“The accused told his parents that Mavhungu and her child went back home. However, the girlfriend’s mother said she did not come home and her phone was off. After starting to worry, the girlfriend’s mother went to Hammanskraal on Sunday to look for her daughter and the toddler,” she said.

Upon searching the boyfriend’s home and yard, the mother found Mavhungu dead in the long drop toilet. “She was found dead in the toilet with several stab wounds. Her two-year-old son was found dead in another long drop toilet, a kilometre away. It seems the toddler was strangled, but an autopsy will determine the cause of death,” said Nowathe.

The man was arrested on Monday after he was found in Katlehong on the East Rand. “The accused left for Katlehong on the 14th, saying he had found new work. At the time, Mavhungu and her son were already dead. The Katlehong police arrested him and he is held at the Temba police station,” said Nowathe.

The man was expected to appear in court soon on two murder charges.
