Police caution residents of house robbers

A group of men have been terrorising Centurion residents for weeks on end. The police warn residents to be on the look-out for any suspicious people in the neighbourhood.

A group of people pretending to be maintenance workers are breaking into houses in Lyttelton, police said.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the group wearing blue reflective coveralls had been terrorising residents for the past few weeks, and valuables such as electric appliances were being stolen. The robbers entered the premises with a bag full of break-in implements to steal valuables.

In a recent robbery, they entered a house on Van Riebeeck street at around 7:00 in the morning, pretending to check water leakages.

“One of the neighbours then suspected that the robbers were about to break-in and then screamed for help, the robbers jumped the fence and ran away,” Gumbu said.

Residents should alert patrollers and the police without delay when they suspected something was amiss.

“We have heard several complaints of the robbers who are operating as a group and we urge residents to be on the look-out and not allow anyone into their premises before verifying.”
