Students exposed to bowling in a fun way
Bowls South Africa, in association with Warrick Wealth and South African Breweries recently created a brand new sporting experience for students from Pretoria with the first ever ‘Barefoot Bowls’ Inter-Residence Challenge.
For many years there has been a perception that bowls is a game for elderly people.
Some people even jokingly refer to the sport as ‘old people’s marbles’. However, it is not generally known that bowls is enjoyed by players of all ages all over the world.
Bowls South Africa, in association with Warrick Wealth and South African Breweries, have now decided to do something to get more young people involved in the game.
The idea of “Barefoot bowls” was born, with the focus on students to help make it work.
The first ever ‘Barefoot Bowls’ Inter-Residence Challenge was presented at the Sunnyside Bowling Club last week. Student teams from residences of the University of Pretoria have agreed to be part of the action, which ultimately ended as great fun for the participants.
Members of the successful Team SA Lawn Bowls at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow were available to assist the students from different hostels with technical aspects of the game and eventually they could play against each other in their first official participation in bowling.
All the organisers of this new bowling concept can now hope for is that the bug has bitten deep enough for young people to return to the bowling green to play the game on a regular basis.
