Police caution residents of house robbers

Neighbours should alert police and patrollers of suspicious people in the neighbourhood.

A group of people pretending to be maintenance workers are breaking into houses in Lyttelton, police said.

Spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu said the group wearing blue reflective coveralls had been terrorising residents for the past few weeks, and valuables such as electric appliances were being stolen. The robbers entered the premises with a bag full of break-in tools to steal valuables.

In a recent robbery, they entered a house in Van Riebeeck Street at around 07:00, pretending to check water leakages.

“One of the neighbours then suspected that the robbers were about to break-in and they screamed for help. The robbers jumped the fence and ran away,” Gumbu said.

Residents should alert patrollers and the police without delay when they suspected something is amiss.

“We have heard several complaints about the robbers who are operating as a group, and urge residents to be on the look-out and not allow anyone onto their premises before verifying their identity.”
