Family traumatized after attempted break-in

Residents are concerned about their safety.

A Centurion family is still distressed after two men attempted to break into their house. Homeowner Amanda Vos said she could not stop thinking about what could have happened to her family in their home in DF Malan Avenue.

She said she could not believe how criminals dared to enter a property even when they knew there were people around.

“What surprised me is that it was midday and while I was working outside in the garden. An alarm went off and I rushed inside. I then saw two men passing by and I screamed for help. The two criminals, who obviously wanted to break in, jumped the wall and fled.”

Vos said a third man was caught by patrollers and handed over to the Lyttelton police. She said she was convinced a tunnel under the railway line to Botha Avenue was a hiding place for criminals.

“We have a huge problem with this tunnel even though the municipality is trying to keep it clean to eliminate criminal activity. We continue to experience crime in the area,” she said.

“This is really getting out of hand and I think the solution will be for the place to be monitored around the clock. Maybe a rotating gate and lighting should be installed. This way, criminals will not be able to run through easily.”

The chairperson of the Lyttelton SAPS Sector 2 Community Policing Forum, Lourens Botha, previously suggested that the area be patrolled in order to ensure that vagrants did not stay in the tunnel.

“Cleaning should be done on a regular basis so that nearby residents could live in a safe environment,” he said.

The police were not immediately available to confirm the arrest.
