Two men posing as police officers recently robbed a 20-year-old man from Pretoria Gardens in Gezina this week.
Jacques Denysschen was on his way to the bank to deposit some money on Tuesday when he met two men pretending to be police officers.
“Two men in a white Citi Golf stopped me on the corner of Steve Biko Road and Nico Smith Street in Gezina. The men introduced themselves as police officers and showed me their police cards,” Denysschen said.
They told him there was a robbery earlier where three criminals shot dead two people.
“They said they were investigating the case as the criminals fled with R31 000. They said they stopped because I was wearing the a red jacket similar to one a criminal was wearing,” explained Denysschen.
“The men then asked me where I was going, andI said to the bank. They asked to check my money to see if it did not have blood stains.”
Denysschen said the men then wrote down his identity number and he showed them the R6 450 he had with him.
“The men found no blood stains and insisted to put the money in an envelope. They gave it back to me and wrote on the outside; ‘No blood’.”
He was then told to return to work and visit the bank later because the road was closed due to the robbery.
“I did as the men told me and went to the bank later with the closed envelope. When I opened the envelope at the bank, I was shocked and surprised to find cut newspapers in the envelope.”
Denysschen said he ran out of the bank because he thought the teller would think he put the newspapers in envelope on purpose.
“I cannot even remember the clothes the men were wearing, but I will be able to recognise them if I see them. I did not even think of taking the registration number of the Golf as I thought they were policemen.” Denysschen said.
Police urged people to be aware of such scams and report similar cases to them.
