The police have launched a manhunt for five armed robbers after they had robbed a Engen filling station in the Loate area in the early hours of Sunday morning.
According to Brigadier Neville Malila, provincial spokesperson, the robbers armed with rifles, entered the filling station and commanded everyone in the convenience store to lie face down on the ground.
“The robbers blew up the safe and robbed an undisclosed amount of money,” he said.
He said the robbers fled the scene in a maroon VW Caravelle minibus and a while Golf. The police attending the scene requested patrol vehicles to be on the look- out for the two vehicles.
“Police on patrol on the R556, spotted the vehicles and gave chase. They tried to stop the vehicles but they failed. Shots were fired at the wheels of the vehicles,” Malila said.
Three people were injured and taken to the Steve Biko hospital.
