PHSG pupils battle it out in the kitchen

Pupils cooked up a storm in a competition to raise funds for their Spring Fair.

Taking their cue from the wildly popular Master Chef and Chopped TV series, Pretoria High School for Girls held their own Spar Battle of the PHSG chefs on Saturday.

This competition was held in order to raise money for their annual Spring Fair.

This was the school’s first money raising event for the year and a first for South Africa in this particular format. According to the organiser, Karin Harris, the event was packed with pressure cooker suspense and heavenly food.

There were four different rounds in which twenty different pupils, together with friends, parents and siblings took part, showing off their culinary skills.

The challenge was to conjure a mouth-watering dish with limited utensils and a bag of mystery ingredients while the clock was ticking. Each round was judged by renowned local chefs from one of the four leading culinary schools in Pretoria: Steyns’ Culinary School, Prue Leith Chefs Academy , South African School of Cookery and the Chefs Training and Innovation Academy.
