Two bogus police officers killed in shootout
Hawks shot and killed two bogus police officers and arrested three others.
Five armed men pretending to be police officers, met their match on Tuesday at midnight when the Hawks pounded on them in Midrand. Two suspected robbers were shot and killed and another three were arrested.
According to Captain Paul Ramaloko, Hawks spokesperson, they had been following the men for a few days and waited for the right moment to strike.
The five would-be robbers were all dressed in police uniform and one of them was an actual constable from Oliefantsfontein police station. They were also driving a fake police vehicle. When the Hawks pounded on them in Midrand a shoot-out left two of the robbers dead.
One of the arrested robbers was the Olifantsfontein police constable.
“We are not sure what the men were planning but we found jamming devices in the vehicle and four weapons. We believe they were either planning a hijacking or a robbery,” Ramaloko said.
This is the second operation where the Hawks uncovered a police officer involved with criminal operations. In July Rekord reported the Hawks’ success in arresting a gang for kidnapping and fraud. A detective of the Pretoria Central police station was involved with that gang.
