One man was shot and killed while another was arrested after an attempted break-in in Rietfontein on Saturday morning, police spokesperson, Captain Colette Weilbach, said.
At about 05:30, a 60-year-old man of Haarhoof Street, Rietfontein, was awoken by a sound outside his house.
“He went to inspect where the noise came from, and saw two unknown men inside his yard tampering with his vehicle. The robber allegedly threatened the homeowner. After the homeowner verbally warned them, he shot a warning shot in their direction,” Weilbach said.
The men fled by foot. Weilbach said one jumped over a wall while the other ran to the back of the house.
“The homeowner found one of them in his lapa, where he handed himself over,” she said.
The Moot police were called to arrest the 31-year-old man from Mamelodi. “The man was found in possession of stolen items and break-in equipment. The homeowner’s vehicle was broken into and the burglar bars of one of his windows of the house were damaged,” said Weilbach.
Upon searching for the second robber, police found him behind the wall with a fatal gunshot wound.
“The Moot police are investigating the incident. The arrested robber will appear in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Monday on charges of attempted burglary, theft and possession of break-in equipment,” Weilbach said.
