Man accused of murders assaulted
A man from Marikana, Mamelodi, was assaulted and his shack burnt on Tuesday after community members accused him of being a serial killer.

A Mamelodi man was assaulted and his shack burnt down by residents on Tuesday (9 September) when members of the Marikana community accused him of being a serial killer, Silverton police spokesperson colonel Charles Matji told Rekord.
Five women were found dead and their bodies dumped in Mamelodi East over the past two weeks, but police have no evidence that the murders were connected.
Speaking from the scene where the man was assaulted, Matji said the burning was a result of rumours of a serial killer in Mamelodi who allegedly drives an Opel: “What I can gather is that community members saw a white Opel in Marikana and said the man driving it was the serial killer. They burnt his shack and two cars.”
The injured man is currently treated in hospital. “Apparently he is hurt but we are still investigating. At the moment, nobody can confirm how he was involved with the murders. We are interviewing witnesses and no arrests have been made as yet,” Matji said.
Provincial police spokesperson captain Doniah Mothutsane said there is no evidence that a serial killer is at large, as stated in some media on Tuesday. She said two bodies were found last week. “The information on our crime reporting system indicates that only two bodies were discovered in Mamelodi East last week. The bodies were found dumped at two different places but with no evidence suggesting that the women might have been killed by the same person,” she said.
One body was found at an open space between a petrol station and a church while the other was found near an informal settlement next to a dumping area.
“At this stage, we cannot confirm the modus operandi. Evidence has been collected at both crime scenes and were sent to the laboratory for analysis. The cases are being investigated by the FCS Unit (Family Violence Children Protection and Sexual Offences Unit). Allegations of a serial killer on the loose cannot be confirmed at this stage. We are awaiting the post mortem results,” Mothutsane said.
