Tuks women’s rugby team do ice bucket challenge
The Tuks women’s rugby team and their coach took up the ice bucket challenge this week.
Two members of the women’s Tuks rugby team and their coach became part of the so-called “Ice Bucket Challenge” this week and joined thousands worldwide, participating in aid of people with motor neurone disease (MND).
The challenge involves a ritual where participants first nominate somebody else to the challenge before a bowl of ice water is emptied on their own heads. The whole ordeal is recorded on video and published on the Internet.
Two of the Tuks women’s team, Frances Muir and Tyler Botha, were brave enough to take up the challenge with their coach, Riaan van der Merwe. They braced themselves in front of the Old Arts building and easily found three volunteers to do the honours of dumping the icy water.
Van der Merwe told Rekord they participated in honour of Springbok legend Joost van der Westhuizen. He is one of the most famous South Africans fighting the deadly motor neurone disease. Up to about eight years ago Van der Westhuizen was the director of coaching at TuksRugby and according to Van de Merwe he had done a lot to establish women’s rugby at the university.
Van der Merwe nominated, among others, the coach of the French women’s rugby team to take up the challenge.
