Scam artist on the run

Police warned residents to be on the lookout for a wanted scam artist.

The Moot police are looking for an alleged scam artist who had been targeting unsuspecting residents at ATM tellers in the Gezina area.

According to Lieutenant Linda Jerling, Moot police spokesperson, the scammer approaches residents who are withdrawing money at an ATM teller.

The man tries to give people assistance with their withdrawal and as soon as they fall for his tricks he swops the original bank card with a fake one.

“After swapping the cards, he disappears and the victim only later discovers the scammer had been making cash withdrawals from their account,” he said.

She said the man is tall, well built, has a dark round face, big eyes and can speak English. He was last seen wearing a blue windbreaker jacket.

Enquiries: Anyone with information that could possibly lead to the arrest of this scammer are urged to phone Detective Warrant Officer Hoffman on 012-353-5424.
