Tears and praises for Oscar
Oscar Pistorius planned to launch his own foundation last year for the development of affordable prosthetics.
Emotional scenes played themselves out in the courtroom where the first phase of the sentencing of Oscar Pistorius commenced yesterday with a weeping Pistorius being comforted by his siblings during the lunch adjournment.
The double amputee former Olympic athlete sat with his head bowed while his former manager Peet van Zyl sang his praises as an ambassador for and member of several child and disability organisations, including Unicef and Reach for a Dream.
“He gave people more than hope, he gave them advice,” Van Zyl testified in mitigation of sentence following Pistorius’ conviction earlier this year of culpable homicide following the shooting death in February last year of his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Van Zyl testified that the athlete had on a regular basis worked with disabled children and athletes, adding that Pistorius’s own foundation to develop affordable prosthetics was set to be launched in June last year.
When court adjourned for lunch, a weeping Pistorius was being hugged and comforted by his sister Aimee and his brother Carl.
