Pupil in court after primary school stabbing

The grade 6 pupil who has been detained for allegedly stabbing another pupil at a primary school will appear in court today.

A grade 6 pupil will appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court today after he allegedly stabbed another pupil to death at a primary school in Mamelodi East on Monday. Captain Doniah Mothutsane, provincial police spokesperson, said the boy has been detained at a place of safety since his arrest on Monday.

On Monday, Rekord broke the news of a 12-year-old pupil allegedly stabbed to death with a sharp object at Bula Dikgoro Primary School. The stabbing occurred during the first few hours of the first school day following the October recess. Paramedics declared the child dead at the scene.

Phumla Sekhonyane, the Department of Education spokesperson, said in a statement that an independent investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident would be carried out.

Counselling and trauma debriefing for the family and pupils at the school will be provided by the department’s social support and pastoral care units.
