Nation’s “hero” dies in accident
Olympian Mbulaeni Mulaudzi died at the age of 34 in a motor vehicle accident on route to Johannesburg on Friday afternoon. President Jacob Zuma expressed his shock and sadness. "The nation has lost a true hero," he said.
South African Olympics hero and gold medalist, Mbulaeni Mulaudzi (34), died on Friday afternoon in a motor vehicle accident. The gold Olympian was on his way to Johannesburg for an Athletics South Africa (ASA) meeting when the accident occurred.
In a statement issued by the Presidency on Friday, President Jacob Zuma, expressed his shock and sadness of the passing of one of the “nation’s heroes”.
“The nation has lost a true hero and one of our most disciplined and talented athletes who flew the South African flag across the sporting globe. We wish to convey, on behalf of government and the entire country, our heartfelt condolences to his family, ASA, the South African sports fraternity and the International Olympics Committee. May his soul rest in peace,” Zuma said in the statement.
Mulaudzi was a South African middle distance runner, and the 2009 world champion in the men’s 800 metres. He carried the flag at the opening ceremony of the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
