Alleged murderer of Bafana captain appears in court
A 25-year-old man appeared in court in connection with the murder of Senzo Meyiwa.
A 25-year-old man who appeared in court on Friday in connection with the murder of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain Senzo Meyiwa had been positively identified in an identity parade, the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said.
Nathi Mncube, NPA spokesperson, the Vosloorus resident, Zanokuhle Mbatha, the alleged murderer, made a brief appearance in the Boksburg magistrates court where he applied for legal aid.
“He will again appear in court on 11 November,” Mncube said.
Mbatha will remain in custody until then.
Meyiwa was shot and killed on Sunday night while visiting his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus.
Two men entered the house and apparently demanded cellphones and money. One cellphone was stolen.
A funeral for Meyiwa will be held today (Saturday) at the 60 000-seat Moses Mabhida Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal. He will be laid to rest at Chesterville’s Heroes Acre cemetery in an official provincial funeral.
