Police raid Brown Street

Police seized drugs and arrested 22 people when raiding crime hotspots in Pretoria on Wednesday.

A total of 22 people were arrested on Wednesday in a clampdown on drugs and other crimes in Pretoria.

Police spokesperson Captain Pinky Tsinyane said the K9 police unit conducted the operation together with the police’s mounted unit, The Independent Communications Authority of SA, Department of Home Affairs and metro police.

They pounced in various areas, including the notorious Brown Street in the city centre.

Those arrested included 10 women, who were illegal immigrants. They were apparently operating as sex workers in the city. Others were taken into custody for drug-related crimes and being in the possession of stolen property.

Brown Street is known as the city’s haven for drug addicts. A number of people smoking the drug nyaope had on numerous occasions confirmed to the Rekord that the street was a major outlet for nyaope as well as dagga.

People have also been seen smoking nyaope and dagga freely in Brown Street.

Previous attempts to clean up the area have not been successful in the long term.
