Charges against TUT students withdrawn

Murder and attempted murder charges have been provisionally withdrawn against four TUT students accused of killing another student in a campus fight.

Murder and attempted murder charges against four students accused of killing another student were provisionally withdrawn in the Soshanguve Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Conflicting accounts from witnesses prompted the move, police spokesperson Warrant Officer Matthews Nkoadi said on Tuesday.

The four students from the Soshanguve campus of the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) were arrested after a first-year language practice student, SB Masuku, was beaten and stoned to death during a fight on campus a few weeks ago.

Nkoadi said there was a conflicting information from witnesses who were had been called to testify in court.

Five more students arrested last week were also released on Monday.

“Last week Friday. five other students, aged between 21 and 25, were arrested and the number of arrested accused increased to nine, but all of them were released yesterday. The magistrate said there was some conflicting information on the docket and handed back the case to the police for further investigation,” said Nkoadi.

Nkoadi said the withdrawal of the case did not mean the case was “now null and void”

He said: “Police will go back to thoroughly investigate the case and as soon they get the information the prosecution will begin.”
