Police are searching for five armed men after they robbed the Centurion Mall during the early hours of Wednesday morning.
The robbers managed to gain entry to the mall just after 05:00 when the security doors opened for mall employees. The robbers forced their way into House&Home and managed to rob the store of various goods.
Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu, spokesperson for the Lyttelton police, said the men managed to flee the scene with eight TV-sets to the value of R150 000.
Chris Evans, chairperson for the community policing forum (CPF) Lyttelton Sector 7 (CPF LS7), said the men assaulted two of the mall’s security guards before fleeing the scene.
One of the security guards was hit over the head with a firearm while the other security guard was held at gunpoint as the robbers made their way out of the mall. Emer-G-Med transported the security guard with head injuries to a nearby hospital.
Evans thanked MonitorNet, ADT, Lyttelton police and CPF members for the rapid response.
He said one of the TV’s were recovered at one of the entrances at the mall after the robbers fled the scene.
There had been a spate of mall robberies in recent months across Gauteng and police have managed to arrest three men in connection with mall robberies in Johannesburg and Centurion.
Collin Moyo (31) and Kaizer Dube (42) were arrested early in October by members of the police crime intelligence division and the tactical operation and management section in Gauteng.
A third alleged robber was arrested in Olifantsfontein after a high-speed chase. He was driving an Audi found to have been stolen in a robbery in Secunda, Mpumalanga.
Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said the three robbers did appear in court separately but will appear together soon.
Gumbu said not arrests were made as of yet but the investigation continues.
