Memorial for beloved Eersterust teacher

Eersterust Secondary School recently held a memorial service for one of their teachers who died in a car accident.

The people of Eersterust said a final farewell on Thursday to English teacher Rachel Williams (56), who was killed in an accident at the weekend.

Pupils and faculty members of Eersterust Secondary School, education MEC Panyaza Lesufi, parents and residents attended a solemn memorial service in the Verenigde Gereformeerde Kerk in Eersterust.

Pupils saluted their late teacher by singing a song. Various tributes were delivered during the ceremony, including one by deputy principal Russel Williams.

Principal William Louw thanked all who helped to organise the service, adding, “We are devastated about this loss, this whole year has been very difficult for us.”

A note from the school posted in the funeral pamphlet read: “We would like to thank you for all your sacrifices, love and care. For all that you have forsaken for us. You provided the best to the best of your abilities. Sometimes we couldn’t understand everything. Thank you for your companionship, your advice and for being you, but thank you most of all for laying the foundation of our faith. We mourn your departure, but we keep all memories close to our hearts!”

Williams, a faculty member at the school since 1986, was killed in an accident on Sunday while on her way to Johannesburg where the matric exam papers were being graded. Five other teachers in the vehicle, from several schools in Pretoria, only suffered minor injuries.

Williams’ son Ralph said this was a difficult time for the family, and thanked the community for its support.
