An Eesterust woman and a 37-year-old man were arrested on Tuesday when police recovered stolen bricks used to build a wall at a house in Kochia Avenue, spokesperson Constable Sam Shibambo told Rekord. This comes after police received a tip-off that a group of men were stealing bricks at an open stand in Helium Street.
“The police went to Helium Street and found suspects loading the bricks onto a bakkie. The 37-year-old man claimed he bought the bricks and had hired men to load them. Police, however, immediately received another call informing them that the owner of the bricks was opening a case of theft,” said Shibambo. The man was immediately arrested, and he led police to a house in Kochia Avenue where the stolen bricks were allegedly bought.
“Upon arrival at Kochia Avenue, police found several men building a perimeter wall for the house. The builders led the police into the house, where the homeowner, a woman in her thirties, was arrested.” The two accused are expected to appear in the Hatfield Magistrate’s Court soon. “We appeal to the community to refrain from buying stolen goods or goods suspected to be stolen, as this is a criminal offence,” Shibambo said.
