UPDATE: Postal strike over
The four-month strike action that brought the country’s mail services to a standstill, is over.
The four-month long post office strike is over, the SA Post Office (Sapo) announced on Tuesday.
The labour action ended following an announcement in the afternoon by one of the unions representing striking workers, the Communication Workers’ Union (CWU).
Sapo had already reached an agreement with two other unions which saw the parastatal’s operations returning to almost normal.
“Today (Tuesday) only 0.7% of our workforce remains absent from work. As a result, operations in all provinces are now at almost 100% capacity,” Sapo announced on Facebook.
The organisation again extended its sincerest apologies to everyone who had been inconvenienced by the strike.
“Plans to work off the backlog have been implemented with the international mail centre (at OR Tambo International Airport), for example, having added a night shift,” Sapo stated.
