A gardener and domestic worker were locked up in a bathroom while thieves looted a house in Monument Drive, Mnandi, earlier today.
Two armed men stormed into the house and forced the pair into a bathroom which they then locked. After ransacking the house, the two robbers later fled with a large stash of jewellery. The gardener managed to open the bathroom window and called for a help.
“A neighbour heard him and immediately called us. Within minutes we were on the scene, but we were too late to catch the thieves,” said Theo Petzer of Monitor Net security firm.
“The two workers are very fortunate that they weren’t hurt. Criminals know when domestic workers are at home during the day, the alarm will be deactivated,” said Petzer.
“This makes the house an easier target. We really encourage people with alarms systems at home to give a remote with a panic button to anybody working at their home. If the two workers today had one, we might have caught the two perpetrators,”
The Olievenhoutbosch police are investigating.
