Motorists targeted on the roadside

Criminals target cars stopping next to the road.

Groups of armed men are pouncing on Centurion motorists who pull off the road to make a phone call, the Lyttelton police and Sector 7 community policing forum warned this week.

“The criminals walk around in groups of three or more, and are usually armed. They target cars parked next to the road, especially people who stop to take a phone call,” said Lyttelton police spokesperson Warrant Officer Hero Gumbu.

“These criminals will either hijack the person in the car, or they will rob them. We urge people to be extra cautious when driving around, and not to stop unless they know they are in a safe area.”

Gumbu said criminals would steal anything during the festive season.

“At this time of the year, people become desperate for money and will steal anything to put food on the table. Exercise extreme caution, and do not take chances with your safety.”

Gumbu said one of these roadside crimes happened in the notorious Von Willich Avenue.

“Von Willich is a notorious hot spot, but incidents like this aren’t confined to that street. It is happening all across Centurion as numerous cases have been reported.”
