Man sentenced to 10 years imprisonment

A 30-year-old man will spend 10 years of his life in prison for the murder of his friend.

A 30-year-old man was recently jailed for 10 years for the murder of his friend in January this year.

The Pretoria Regional Court convicted Victor Songo (30) for murder and sentenced him to 10 years effective imprisonment, said Hercules police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango.

He said Songo was having a drink with his friend James Mbetse (46) in Hermanstad on 12 January when they got into an argument.

Songo stood up, broke a beer bottle and stabbed Mbetse several times before running away to change the clothes he was wearing.

“Mbetse tried to walk to the toilet but collapsed and died. The police were called to the scene and the accused was pointed out among the crowd who saw what happened,” said Msimango.

Investigations led to the recovery of the clothes with blood and Songo was arrested and charged with murder.

“We welcome the sentence and the determination of the investigating officer, Constable Donavon Naicker. He ensured that there was an effective investigation, which led to the conviction and sentence of the accused,” Msimango said.
