Rietgat shop robbed

Criminals also target furniture trucks because they carry valuable goods.

A shop owner was robbed of an undisclosed amount of cash, cellphones and airtime in Rietgat this week, police said.

Rietgat police station spokesperson Warrant Officer Lolo Mangena said three men entered the shop under the pretence to buy airtime and bread.

“Inside, a firearm was pointed at the shop owner and the men demanded cash. They also took cell phones and airtime. They ordered the shop staff to lie down and tied their hands and feet with cable ties.”

Mangena said the three men made off in a blue car later found abandoned in a remote area near Klipgat cemetery.

“The men are said to be connected to other crimes in the area where a plasma TV, Sony home theatre, a sound system, microwave and a double door fridge were stolen from a furniture truck. We appeal to residents to help with any information that can lead to the successful arrest of these men.”

Mangena said hijackings and the robbery of furniture delivery trucks were rife in the Rietgat area.

“This is a major headache for us. Criminals are targeting furniture trucks because they carry goods such as TVs, laptops and home theatre sound systems.”

Criminals also targeted courier service trucks that delivered cellphones to residential houses, Mangena said.
