VIDEO: Police chase leads to arrest of two suspected robbers
Two men arrested in connection with an armed robbery at Glenfair shopping centre on Monday morning.
The police arrested two suspected robbers on Monday morning following an armed hijacking at Glenfair shopping centre.
Warrant Officer Dave Miller, police spokesperson, said a delivery vehicle was hijacked at Glenfair at around 10:30 on Monday. A description of one of the get-away vehicles was given to the police helicopter that traced it to the underground parking at the Watermeyer Park shopping centre.
“The vehicle was found abandoned but police managed to arrest two of the men who were still in the vicinity,” Miller said.
He said it is unclear how many vehicles or suspected robbers were involved in the hijacking.
Miller said the hijacked delivery vehicle was still missing and police were still looking for the other suspected hijackers involved.
He said that although it was still under investigation, early findings showed that two R5 rifles and a 9mm handgun were left in the get-away vehicle by the men.
According to Braam Espach, an eye-witness,he had noticed a police helicopter circling the Watermeyer Park shopping centre. “From what I could see the police managed to arrest one man who was hiding in the toilet at the Engen filling station. Another one was later apprehended at a different location,” he said.
Miller said the investigation is still ongoing.
