Weekend police operations pay off

Police warn of a spike in crime during the December holidays.

No fewer than 175 people were arrested for various crimes over the weekend, Atteridgeville police said on Monday.

People were taken in for offences ranging from burglary, possession of dagga and common assault, said police spokesman Captain Thomas Mufumadi.

“The arrests come after stop-and-search operations, roadblocks, and random stopping of vehicles in the area.”

He said police in the area would try and minimise crime.

“We know during the December holidays, crime is high. Criminals take advantage because everyone is busy, and that is why police have to be on high alert.”

Mufumadi said various routes would be monitored this festive season.

Another 120 people were arrested in a similar operation in Laudium.

Police spokesperson Captain Reed Steynberg said they were caught at roadblocks and during stop-and-search operations in the area.

“We managed to nab suspects who were in possession of drugs, suspected stolen items, dangerous weapons such as knives, and drunk driving.”

Police would continue watching crime hotspots such as the Laudium plaza and would patrol the area during the holidays.

“There are lots of theft out of motor vehicles that happen in Laudium plaza, so police visibility during the holidays would increase.”

She urged residents to be on high alert during the holidays.

“Many house break-ins happen when the home owners are away, as well as at weekends. So, residents must look after their neighbourhood as well as form a neighbourhood watch in their area.”
