A man was arrested over cable theft near the Kwagga substation on Thursday, police said.
He was caught near the Kwagga substation in Pretoria West, carrying a six metre feeder cable and taken to the Pretoria West police station. A theft docket was opened.
“A man was arrested on a charge of theft in the early hours of Thursday. He appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s court on Friday,” said Pretoria West police spokesperson Constable Lerato Ngomane.
A source said the Tshwane metro police department’s special projects team received a tip-off about someone tampering with a tension wire near the Kwagga substation. The special projects team surrounded the cable area and cornered the man.
Residents have applauded the team for the good work done, as cable theft in the area was a great concern.
“I am glad there is a special team dealing with bringing down cable theft in our area. We are really struggling with cable theft and always report it to the police,” resident Nkosinathi Lekalakala said.
His friend and neighbour, Gert Johannes, said cables had been stolen a number of times.
“We need cable theft curbed. Our lives get more and more difficult every day when these people steal the cables, because we have to wait days before they are repaired,” he said.
