A Monitor Net reaction officer was shot and wounded and a factory manager seriously injured in a robbery in Sunderland Ridge, Centurion, on Wednesday evening.
Four men assaulted and tied up the manager after forcing him to unlock a door. Security officer Solly Chabalala was shot when he responded to the alarm signal. The bullet hit his right shoulder, missing his bulletproof vest by centimetres, said Monitor Net operations manager Theo Petzer.
The robbers opened fire through a wooden door at the factory in Ellman Street.
“Two shots were fired through the door and one hit the officer. He quickly moved away from the door and robbers chased after him, firing five more shots in his direction,” Petzer said.
The officer called for backup.
“Monitor Net dispatched reaction units to the premises and Centurion Concerned Citizens, (CCC) together with other security services immediately offered assistance. The robbers had, however, already fled from the scene in the factory manager’s Toyota Tazz.”
Petzer said the injured factory manager was found and transported to hospital to receive medical attention. He was brutally assaulted and suffered serious injuries to his head and face.
It was later determined that the robbers forced the manager to open the factory in order to gain access to a safe.
The manager and a helper worked till late that evening and after they locked up the factory, at least four robbers in three vehicles followed them and boxed in the manager’s vehicle at a nearby T-junction.
The helper ran away and robbers tied the the manager’s hands with cables. Two of the robbers jumped into his vehicle and drove with him to the factory where they forced him to unlock the door.
Petzer said the manager and the security officer were both in a stable condition.
The Monitor Net team thanked everyone who assisted, including CCC, Scorpion Security, ADT, Apcan guarding division, Copwatch, Erasmia police, and Emer-g-med.
