Community apprehend alleged kidnapper

Members of the community helped apprehend a man after he allegedly kidnapped a woman and a child.

A 22-year-old man was arrested near Centurion Gate on Sunday when he allegedly kidnapped a woman and a child from Heuwelsig, Centurion, Concerned Citizens spokesperson, Hannes Du Buisson, told Rekord.

“We received a call from a community member concerning a man who had kidnapped a woman and a child who is believed to be about 1 year old. We received information that the vehicle that was used during the kidnapping was found abandoned at Akkerboom Street and John Vorster Drive in the basement parking,” Du Buisson said.

Du Buisson said between 50 and 60 community members, patrollers, members of Lyttelton Sector 1 Community Police Forum (CPF) and other CPF members searched the area and found the man and his victims on the other side of the road.

“The suspect was found with the woman and child. He was arrested and fortunately the woman and child were safe and unharmed,” he said.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said a case of kidnapping and robbery is investigated.

“The case will be moved to Wierdabrug police station. It is believed the suspect is the woman’s boyfriend,” Miller said.
