Decomposing body found in ceiling

The body of a gardener was found in a ceiling in a complex in Moreleta Park on Monday.

The decomposing corpse of a 54-year-old gardener was found in the ceiling of his room in a complex in Moreleta Park on Monday.

It is believed the body of Frans Selomane had been concealed in the ceiling for almost a week before it was discovered by a family member.

Frans’ brother, Johannes Selomane, said on the scene he found the body between the ceiling and roof with a rope tied around the neck.

Family members said they suspected foul play rather than suicide as his feet were touching the ceiling and there was blood at the back of his t-shirt.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said the man was reported missing at the Garsfontein police station last week.

Frans had been working at the Lucretia complex for more than thirty years and his disappearance came as a surprise.

Caretaker Troy Ganten-Bein said a resident of the complex picked up an odd smell on Sunday. “On Monday, the smell had become unbearable and a family member discovered Frans’ body inside the ceiling upon investigating,” he said.

By late afternoon, the body had not yet been removed and the fire brigade had been called to assist with the removal.
