Woman caught disposing of newborn baby’s body

Police arrested a Ga-Rankuwa woman for trying to dispose of a newborn baby recently. They are alarmed at the rate of such incidents.

A 34-year-old Ga-Rankuwa woman has been arrested for trying to dispose of the body of a newborn child, police said on Monday.

Ga-Rankuwa police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mathews Nkoadi said the arrest followed a tip-off from a resident. “Police found the woman in Zone 16 in Ga-Rankuwa. She had with her a bag and a bucket, and police found the body of the baby inside the bag.”

He said the woman was being detained at the Ga-Rankuwa police station and DNA tests would be done to find out if she was related to the child.

He said the issue of concealment of birth was an alarming problem in the Ga-Rankuwa area. “The number of cases being reported at the police station is worrying. When a mother does not want her child, there are many other options and legal routes open to her,” said Nkoadi.

Social workers were available to help women unable to raise their babies or unsure about whether they wanted to keep the child.

“Mothers can give their babies up for adoption. There are many people who want to have children but are unable to,” Nkoadi said.
