State’s bid to appeal Oscar case to be heard
The state will hear on Tuesday whether a judge will grant their bid for leave to appeal against the conviction and sentencing of Oscar Pistorius.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) will on Tuesday hear whether a judge will grant their application for leave to appeal against the conviction and sentencing of Paralympian Oscar Pistorius.
Pistorius was sentenced to five years after he was convicted of culpable homicide in September for shooting and killing his model girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine’s Day last year.
He has currently served 49 days at the hospital wing of the Kgosi Mampuru Prison.
NPA spokesperson, Nathi Mncube, said the sentencing was ‘shockingly light’ and seeks clarity on the principle of dolus eventualis from the
Supreme Court of Appeal, cited by Judge Thokozile Masipa in her verdict.
Dolus eventualis is where an accused could foresee the consequences of his or her actions.
“The NPA reiterates that the decision to appeal was taken on the basis that it believes there exists reasonable prospects of a successful appeal based on a question of law.”
The matter will be heard at the North Gauteng High Court.
