Man shot and killed in Jeffsville

A truck carrying more than 150 laptops was hijacked by men posing as police officers.

A truck carrying more than 150 laptops has been hijacked by men posing as police officers.

Atteridgeville police spokesperson Captain Thomas Mufumadi said the truck was stopped on the R511 near Quagga Road on Tuesday morning by men posing as police.

“The statement we received from the truck driver is that they were stopped by three men posing as police officer. It is alleged that the vehicle that the men were driving in had blue lights and was unmarked.”

He said the men ordered the truck driver and the delivery men to get out of the car and lie down.

“One of the men drove off in a car while the other two fled in the truck containing the laptops,” said Mufumadi.

The truck was found empty in Atteridgeville Sabona section on Tuesday afternoon.

Mufumadi advised truck drivers not to stop when they are being flagged down by motorists. “They must drive to the nearest police station, because there are a lot of criminals posing as police officers these days.”

In another crime, a man was shot and killed in Jeffsville near Atteridgeville on Tuesday. Mufumadi said Phillip Sithole was at his home with his friend when this happened.

“Sithole and his friend Thabo Kweyama were sitting outside, listening to music and having beer when the suspect passed by Sithole’s house and started swearing at the two men,” said Mufumadi.

“Sithole and Kweyama approached the man and a fight broke out. It is alleged that the man pulled out a firearm and shot Sithole in the upper body. The bullet exited through the side of the body and hit Kweyama in the shoulder.”

Sithole died on the scene while Kweyama was taken to hospital.

Mufumadi said the man fled after the shooting.

“We appeal to residents in helping us to locate the man. Anyone who might have witnessed the shooting must give information to the police.”
