Robbery suspect killed in police chase

An alleged robber died and another was injured in a police chase in Hammanskraal.

A young robbery suspect was killed and another injured when a police chase in Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, ended in a crash involving three vehicles on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Makgotso Mphenyeke said three men were travelling in a red Volkswagen Golf when police tried to pull them over during a routine patrol.

Mphenyeke said the men were believed to have been involved in a robbery in the Temba area earlier this month.

“The men ignored orders by the police to pull over and they instead sped off,” Mphenyeke said. “Police gave chase and the driver lost control of the vehicle, rolled it and crashed into two parked vehicles along the R101 road.”

Mphenyeke said one of the three occupants, a 22-year-old man, died on the scene.

The driver was injured and taken to the Jubilee hospital in Temba where he was being kept under police watch. He was in a stable condition.

The third alleged robber ran away before police could stop at the scene and was being sought.

Mphenyeke said the driver would appear in court later on charges of culpable homicide and armed robbery.
