The police and the Gauteng community safety officials have joined forces to fight crime in Sunnyside, including house robberies, substance abuse and theft from motor vehicles.
They conducted a crime awareness roadshow in the area and Arcadia last Friday, discussing with residents ways to protect themselves against criminal elements when police were not immediately available.
Sunnyside police spokesperson Sergeant Asnath Malatsi said people should keep doors and gates locked at all times.
“Leaving a door or a gate unlocked gives criminals opportunity to easily gain access into the house and commit robbery.”
Malatsi advised people to be on their guard when visiting taverns and nightclubs.
“There are criminals who spike drinks with dangerous substances these days. People pass out after drinking any spiked drink, including water. Criminals steal valuables once a victim had passed out.”
Malatsi warned people against abusing alcohol, saying this made them easy targets for criminals.
During the roadshow, the department’s officials and the police interacted with residents, discussing safety issues and identifying crime hotspots.
