A thief shot and wounded by a security guard at the Absa Bank building in Gezina on Friday ran away with R25 000 in cash he had taken from a parked vehicle.
Captain Coba Brits, police spokesperson, said the owner of the vehicle left the money unattended inside when two men broke into the vehicle and took the money.
Apparently the owner was inside the bank depositing the other half of the money.
“The security guard at the bank saw the thieves and fired gunshots,” Brits said. “They ran away with the money and are still at large.”
Eyewitness Ron Sibiya said he was withdrawing cash from an ATM outside the bank when he heard two gunshots.
He saw someone frantically running in his direction.
“I panicked, left my money in the ATM and also started running,” Sibiya said. “I did not know what was happening or exactly where the shots were coming from.”
According to one of the bank staff members, one of the thieves were wounded in the chest by the gunshot.
Brits could not confirm whether anyone had been shot, saying police were investigating.
