Faerie Glen area policing boundaries change

New police precinct boundaries came into effect for the Faerie Glen area on 1 December 2014.

The precinct boundaries of the Faerie Glen area have changed.

The eastern boundary of Garsfontein Sector 2 (Faerie Glen area) has moved further east and will now include a part of Sector 1 that used to fall under the Boschkop precinct.

The change was put into effect on 1 December to align the precincts with magisterial districts.

Sean van Rooyen, chairperson of Garsfontein sector 2 community policing forum (CPF), said he recently learned the new boundary was now an imaginary line drawn from the intersection of Eros Street (east of Solomon Mahlangu Drive) with Atterbury Road north-east all the way to Lynnwood Road.

Precinct boundaries determine who is policing which areas and where crime should be reported.

Fanus Johnson, chairperson of the MyFaerieGlen Neighbourhood Watch, said the feeling among residents was always that the whole of Faerie Glen, including the newer extensions east of Solomon Mahlangu, should have fallen under the Garsfontein precinct.

“We welcome this change, however, the new boundary is not logical as it does not form a natural divider.”

He said the new border would lead to confusion among residents whether they resided under Garsfontein or Boschkop precincts.

“The boundary should have moved even further east up to Bronberg ridge to perhaps also include Boardwalk Manor and Boardwalk Meander.”

Johnson said the matter will be taken up with the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety.

“Operationally it makes more sense to include the whole area (east of Solomon Mahlangu) under the same umbrella. We will have discussions with the neighbourhood watch leaders on that side to decide how to go forward.”

It was unclear whether additional resources would be allocated to Garsfontein police station for the additional area to be serviced.
