Police clamp down on crime
Police clamped down on criminal activities during the weekend as part of their on-going festive season operation.

Visible policing and a go-getter attitude ensured that 67 criminals were arrested by police members from the Sunnyside cluster over the weekend.
Captain Colette Weilbach, police spokesperson, said these arrests form part of the SAPS’s ongoing festive season operations.
“The police in the Sunnyside cluster had committed themselves to secure the streets, residential areas and business sectors to ensure that all communities are and feel safe,” she said.
High police visibility operations over the weekend focused on property and contact-related crimes. The arrests that were made from Friday till Sunday morning include seven arrests for theft, 10 for drunken driving, eight for shoplifting, seven for assault, two for possession of drugs and two for possession of suspected stolen property.
“On Friday morning the Brooklyn police also arrested a 28-year-old suspect for house robbery that occurred in Julius Jeppe Street in Waterkloof, Pretoria. The owner of the house was held up by four unknown men while they stole jewellery,” she said.
She said the robbers were disturbed by police that was patrolling the area. They fled on foot and left their white Toyota Tazz behind at the scene. “One suspect injured his foot when he jumped over a wall. He was arrested and is currently in hospital under police guard. The other three suspects are still at large and police investigation is continuing,” Weilbach said.
Lyttelton police arrested a 30-year-old man for rape on Sunday morning at 01:00 near Cornwall Estate.
Weilbach said the man forced a 24-year-old woman inside his vehicle. After he raped her, she managed to flee. The alleged rapist, who was pointed out to the police by the victim, was later arrested when his vehicle broke down.
All the suspects will appear in Pretoria Magistrate’s Court and the Hatfield Community Court during the coming week to face charges for the various crimes they committed.
