Man appears in court over Mamelodi shooting
Residents of Phomolong Informal Settlement oppose bail against a man charged with shooting and killing Nthabiseng Ramoroka (8) in Mamelodi.
Residents of the Phomolong informal settlement in Extension 6 gathered outside the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court on Monday for the appearance of a man who allegedly shot dead an eight-year-old girl last week.
Frans Ganyane faces charges including murder and attempted murder for the death of Nthabiseng Ramoroka.
She was shot in the head while Ganyane was fighting with his wife over sex.
The shooting took place in Phomolong, Extension 6 in Mamelodi in the early hours of Thursday, last week. Residents sang songs outside the court demanding that he not be granted bail.
Tebogo Madiseng, one of the residents said: “We came here to make sure that justice is done and we will oppose bail against the suspect. Should he be granted bail, the community will have to deal with the suspect accordingly, as they should have done before handing him over to the police.”
Ganyane’s wife ran to the neighbour’s house to seek help from the Ramoroka family, who were preparing to go to work and school. Nthabiseng’s father tried to intervene inside the shack before Ganyane apparently fired two shots.
Paramedics declared Nthabiseng dead on the scene. The police arrested Ganyane and seized a licensed firearm.
Nthabiseng was a pupil at Koos Matli Primary School in Mamelodi East. She is survived by her mother, father and 15-year-old brother.
Ganyane will remain in police custody and will be back in court on 21 January for a bail application.
