Alleged cop killer arrested

A 24-year-old-man has been arrested for allegedly killing a police officer in Winterveldt, Mabopane, police spokesperson Captain Kabelo Marumo said on Tuesday.

He said the victim was shot several times in the upper body in the early hours of Monday. The officer died shortly after he was taken for medical attention. The alleged killer was arrested on the same day.

The policeman was off-duty and spending time in a tavern when he was shot. He was unarmed.

Marumo said: “A firearm that does not have a serial number was found during the arrest but we cannot confirm if it is the same one that was used to commit the murder.”

At this stage there was no clear motive for the murder.

The arrested man is expected to appear in the Ga-Rankuwa Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
