The notorious T-junction near a low-water bridge in Centurion has claimed another smash-and-grab victim.
What should have been a normal Monday morning turned into an ordeal for Marié Smit from Hennopspark.
“A man knocked on the passenger’s window asking for money. The next moment he punched the window out and it shattered. He grabbed my handbag, that I store underneath my passenger seat, and took off,” she said.
A rattled Smit phoned Gerdus, her husband, to inform him of the smash-and-grab.
He immediately started to trace the phone through his wife’s Google account and managed to follow the thief’s movements.
“He walked from Jean Avenue towards Unitas hospital and from there he grabbed a taxi to Visagie Street in Pretoria. He walked to Minnaar Street and entered an apartment block but we lost signal after that,” he said.
The Smit-couple informed the police and Hi-Risk security about the theft. “But there was really nothing they could do with the little information they had. We are just thankful for everyone’s swift response,” he said.
Chris Evan, chairman of Lyttelton Sector 7 CPF, said the corner of End Street and Rabie Street is very dangerous T-junction and that thefts usually occur at night.
“There are potentially two people involved and they are usually dressed in black. We urge motorists to stay vigilant and to store all valuable items in the boot. Keep off your cellphone and stay alert,” Evans warned.
