Excited for their first day

No amount of rain could dampen the spirits of eager little grade 1's on their first day of school.

Thousands of new grade 1 learners in Pretoria experienced school life for the first time on Wednesday. Though the rain provided a wet, dreary picture for most learners back from the holidays, the grade 1’s were so excited that many had a difficult time sitting still long enough to take it all in.

Across Pretoria, the newest members of the academic environment filled the classrooms, eager to begin their new adventure. With proud parents waving goodbye, the grade 1’s took their place next to their fellow learners, as they filled the school halls for the first time.

For some, learning to queue and waiting for break was an entirely new experience, but very few teachers reported tears from their eager new learners. Many schools experienced a slight increase in grade 1 pupils this year, but most were able to welcome everyone.
