Crash damages at Elandspoort house
A house in Elandspoort may have to be rebuilt after a bakkie crashed into it.
An Elandspoort house may need to be rebuilt after it was hit by a bakkie on Sunday night.
The owner, Petra Roos, said the damage had turned out to be worse than initially thought.
“It was like an action movie when I saw the upside down bakkie crashing into the house. The driver came at high speed and I heard him trying to brake but failed. Because of the speed, he was unable to stop.”
Roos said the vehicle overturned before it hit the house. Her son was in the bathroom at the time. Roos was standing opposite the house when the accident happened.
The bakkie almost hit a neighbour as he was about to turn into the road. A second neighbour walking by with her son was missed by centimetres.
Damage to Roos’ house was serious as the violence of the crash seemed to have shifted the building from its foundation. The bathroom is totally destroyed and the kitchen cupboards was off the wall. She said the doors, windows and gates were all disjointed.
“The police said I cannot live in my house because it has cracked, but I will not leave my house.”
Roos said her house needed to be rebuilt, adding she would need help for this.
“I thank the neighbours for their help and supporting me and my children. We do not have water and every day they manage to bring us cooked food. I am grateful.”
Netcare 911’s spokesperson Santi Steinmann said there were three men in the bakkie. Two were seriously injured and the third escaped unharmed.
A resident, who asked not to be named, said it appeared as if a high-speed chase preceded the accident.
“All I know is that there was a Golf chasing the bakkie with three men inside, that ended up crashing into the wall of the house.”
Police are yet to confirm the accident.
