Police take initiative to fight muggings
Police have started patrolling the area around Pretoria West High School where pupils, TUT students and residents have been robbed.
Since Pretoria West High School complained about the muggings of pupils at the footbridge in Vom Hagen Street, police have acted to fight the problem.
Every morning and afternoon Pretoria West police sector have been patrolling the area. “We started last week to patrol the area because it is our children who are victims of these muggings. We start patrolling from 06:30 until 08:30 every morning and those who are able to patrol in the afternoons, do so,” a patrolling resident said.
He also said since they have started patrolling every day, there were less muggings. There are patrollers at the foot bridge, some in Rebecca Street and some near the cemetery.
Police vehicles have also started being visible at specific spots where there had been criminal activities. “Every morning the Pretoria West police station commander also comes around to check on the situation,” said the resident.
According to Pretoria West police spokesperson Constable Lerato Ngomane, their sector team was at the foot bridge in the mornings and afternoons when the pupils were on the move. “This is mainly in the interest of the safety and security of our children and the community at large.”
